Herbert C. Ward

MacArthur honor guard was trucker, chauffeur

TRANSFER — Herbert C. Ward of Transfer, passed away at noon Tuesday (12-18-12) in his home. He was 84.

Mr. Ward was born Oct. 8, 1928, in McKees-port, Pa., to Gustavis and Bertha Ward.

He graduated from McKeesport High School in 1946.

Mr. Ward drove truck for Cooper Jarrett in West Middlesex, Firth Sterling of McKeesport and Hovis of Grove City for 35 years. He was a chauffeur for six years for the the local businessman James E. Winner Jr. Mr. Ward retired at age 75.

He was raised in the Baptist faith. He served in the Army from 1946 to 1948 and was part of the honor guard for Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Japan.

Mr. Ward was a past quartermaster for six years, served on the honor guard detail and was very active in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. He was a past member of Teamsters union Local 261 of and belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 517, Sharpsville; Zem Zem Shrine, Erie; and Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory.

He enjoyed woodworking.

His wife, the former Ethel Boyd, whom he married April 13, 1962, survives at home.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Kathy Jacobs and her companion Rudy Molnar, Pittsburgh; and Deborah Parsons, Helen, Ga.; two sons, Edward Ward, Cleveland, Ga.; and Carl Ward, Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jack Ward; a sister, Mary Minyon; and two brothers, Oswald Ward and Jack Ward.

Calling hours were Friday (12-21-12) John Flynn Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Hermitage, with a Masonic service by Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 517, Sharpsville. Friends may sign a guestbook at

Funeral service was Saturday (12-22-12) in the funeral home chapel with Sam Marchetta, Heartland Hospice chaplain, officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds.

Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505.
