William C. Hoffman

Navy vet, Harrisville grad played with The Plaidettes

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — William C. Hoffman Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va. passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., after a long illness. He was 72.

Bill was born on Dec. 4, 1940, in Harrisville.

He was a 1958 graduate of Harrisville High School, a member of the school's last graduating class. Among his high school activities, he was a member of the school's orchestra and a drummer for the competitive marching band, The Plaidettes, Grove City.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Bill served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. During his time in the Navy, he was a member of the drum and bugle corps at San Diego, Calif.

Beginning his work career in office supply sales, he soon turned to restaurant management, serving as a store, district, and regional manager and finally director of operations for Chart House Restaurants for more than 30 years, working in New Orleans, Chicago, Houston and finally Virginia Beach. To conclude his career, he co-owned fast food restaurants in Virginia Beach.

A devoted father and husband and an avid reader and student of military history. Bill possessed a tireless work ethic, a contagious sense of humor, and can-do spirit, all of which will be sorely missed.
