Mom, grandma worked at SRU in food service

BUTLER COUNTY — Funeral is today for Lucy Blair Courtney, formerly of Eau Claire, who passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a four-year battle with dementia. She was 86.

Mrs. Courtney was born Oct. 9, 1927 in Cherry Township, Butler County, the daughter of the late Thomas Costa, Sr. and Anna Massaro Costa.

She was a former employee of Sportspal, Inc. of Emlenton and worked in food service at Slippery Rock University for several years in Weisenpflugh Dining Hall.

Lucy was a full-time mother and homemaker. She loved her hobbies of cooking, baking, gardening and spending time with her family. She especially loved being "Grandma" to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Butler, were she served as a greeter in years' past and was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class.

She was an avid Steelers' fan.

Lucy never knew a stranger and always fed anyone who came to her home. Her hands were never still, and were always ready to help anyone in need.

Her husband, Dean R. Blair, whom she married Oct. 15, 1949, died June 13, 1977, after 27 years of marriage.

She later married G. Ray Courtney of Mercer, who passed away July 25, 1998.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, John Blair, husband of Lynee, Greer, S.C.; two daughters, Marcy Jervis, wife of Donald, Rochester, Ind; and Darcy Thompson, wife of Larry, Butler; her stepchildren, Mark Courtney, husband of Debbie; Bruce Courtney, husband of Holly; and Carol Courtney, all of Mercer; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Josephine Turk, Clara Wimberly and Rose Majeroni, all of Erie; Rebecca Oravecz, Hilliards; and Genevieve Chernick, Butler; and two brothers, Samuel Costa, Butler; and Thomas Costa Jr., Eau Claire.

Besides her husbands and parents, preceding her in death are two sisters, Lena Turk and Mary Hilliard; and two brothers, Carmen and John Costa.

Lucy's family would like to thank all the medical, nursing and care-giving staff at Sunnyview Nursing Home and Butler Memorial Hospital for their years of dedicated and thoughtful care for their mother.

Calling hours: Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until the time of service today (1-22-14) in YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, Ltd., 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.

Service: Funeral is at 7 p.m. today, with the Rev. David Johnson, pastor of First Baptist Church, Grove City, officiating.

Interment: North Washington Cemetery.
