GROVE CITY —
As part of a project "code named" Operation Joint Forces, Grove City organizations are bringing a portable facsimile of the Vietnam Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery to Grove City this week.
Every Wednesday and Saturday Allied News edition leading up to the opening of the traveling tribute included a local veteran's story, as part of a sponsored advertisement. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute/Traveling Wall is 80 percent the size of the original and will be the centerpiece of a four-day fundraiser for the United Services Organization at the National Guard Armory, 160 George Junior Road, Grove City.
The tribute is made possible by American Legion Posts #160 and #220; Grove City Lodge #603, Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania, and; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #519. Contributing are Grove City Borough Council, the Office of Veterans Affairs for Mercer County, and others.
There will be no charge to view the wall, but there will be opportunities to donate.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. the event will be opened by a motorcycle honor escort of the wall from Mercer to Grove City. The ride is open to all motorcycle riders and other vehicles. The Mercer County Sheriff's Office will lead the escort and the police departments of Mercer and Grove City will participate within their respective borough limits.
Please note the route the wall will follow into Grove City: south on Route 58 to South Broad Street, to Blair Street, to Center Street, to West Main Street to Ivan Drive (Grove City Masonic Hall).
There will be an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12 and 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, a catered fundraiser banquet will be held at the Grove City Masonic Hall, 1340 W. Main St. Tickets are $40: 724-458-8310. Each ticket purchase makes a $23 donation to the USO.
