Party at the Rock for 125th

SLIPPERY ROCK — St. Patrick's Day has come and gone, but this Wednesday is expected to be a sea of green at Slippery Rock University, where students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members will be enjoying a birthday party and more to commemorate the school's opening 125 years ago.

"This event is sponsored by the students' Green and White Society and participants are encouraged to wear their school colors," Judith Silva, a co-chair for SRU's 125th anniversary steering committee, said of the birthday party; George Mihalik and Laurel Dagnon are also co-chairing the steering committee, and Wilma Cavill and Bob Watson are honorary co-chairs.

Wednesday has been named National Green Day in honor of the celebration, and those sporting school colors are also encouraged to email a selfie to be shared on SRU's Facebook page to Gordon Ovenshine at

The public is invited to the Founders' Day Celebration, which starts at 10 a.m. with a formal ceremony in the Alumni House, where proclamations will be presented from President Barack Obama, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, the PASSHE Board of Governors and county, borough and township officials, Silva said.

The celebration will move to the Smith Student Center ballroom from noon to 2 p.m. for a "festive birthday bash" with cake and party games. A group photo is set for 1:25 p.m.

The committee is also excited about the Evening of the Arts planned for Friday and presented by SRU's College of Fine and Performing Arts, she said.

A reception and art exhibition starts at 6:15 p.m. in the ballroom followed by performances at 7 p.m.

"This free event will be a true showcase of talent at Slippery Rock University and the community is welcome," Silva said.

Another major event is the Founders' Picnic set for June 21, and the public is also invited to attend "in the spirit and tradition of our founding in 1889," she said.

For the picnic, the committee is looking for descendants of the university's founders and needs volunteers to help spread the word. For more information, contact Bob Watson, vice president of student life, at 724-738-2003.

More events and festivities to mark SRU's 125th anniversary will continue throughout the year, and Silva, who is also a fine and performing arts librarian and archivist at SRU, has enjoyed being right in the middle of everything.

"It has been such a rewarding experience working with faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and community members, but far and away the best part is collaborating with our amazing students," she said. "Seeing students engaged and excited about our institution's history inspires the planning committee and makes our efforts worthwhile."
