Local drilling reports include violations

BUTLER, MERCER COUNTY AREAS — The most recent reports of local gas and oil drilling activities in the Allied News coverage area show new permits and violations have been issued.

The following data covers Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties and the information came from searching records on the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection website, which anyone can access.

Other reports came from SkyTruth, a non-profit group that uses remote sensing and digital maps to create images that "expose the landscape disruption and habitat degradation caused by mining, oil and gas drilling, deforestation, fishing and other human activities," according to its website.

SkyTruth, which gathers data from DEP records, issues alerts about drilling activities and violations via email notifications.

Between Aug. 31 and Sept. 30, the DEP issued:

■ In Butler County: Seven permits to drill and operate gas wells - one in Connoquenessing Township to XTO Energy Inc. on the Patton property; two in Forward Township to XTO on the Gill property; and four to EM Energy PA in Oakland Township on the Ursa Major property.

Also, two permits were issued to drill and operate oil wells, both in Concord Township to US Energy Exploration Corp. - one on the Stocklin property and one on the Miller property.

■ In Lawrence County: One permit to drill and operate a gas well in Little Beaver Township to Shell Oil on the Patterson property.

■ In Mercer County: Two permits to drill and operate gas wells - one in Jefferson Township to Chevron Appalachia on the McCullough property; and one in Shenango Township to Hilcorp Energy on the Radkowski property.

These violations were issued during that time period:

■ In Lawrence County: Hilcorp was issued an administrative violation after a Sept. 18 routine inspection for failure to plug a well upon abandonment at a site in North Beaver Township.

■ In Venango County: Vista Operating Inc. was issued an administrative violation after a Sept. 23 in Cranberry, but no further details were provided.
