Local drilling activities

The following data came from a combination of information provided on the websites for the FracTracker Alliance and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, along with help from Sam Malone, the Alliance's manager of science and communications.

Between Jan. 1, 2005, and March 28, 2013, the DEP issued:

■ In Mercer County: 19 permits for gas/oil drilling; seven well permits; and zero violations.

■ In Butler County: 422 permits for drilling; 192 well permits; and 45 violations.

■ In Lawrence County: 44 permits for drilling; 19 well permits; and one violation.

■ In Venango County: 11 permits for drilling; five well permits; and four violations.

The most recent data in and around the Allied News coverage area shows these properties in Mercer County:

■ Chevron Appalachia LLC has gas well drilling permits for the Hurtt property in East Lackawannock Township.

■ Hilcorp Energy Co. has oil and gas well drilling permits for the James property in Lackawannock Township.

■ Shell Oil has gas well permits for the Shannon property in Lake Township.

In Butler County:

■ Shell has oil and gas well drilling permits for the Halterlein property in Mercer Township, where the company was issued a violation on Jan. 3 for failing to notify DEP, the landowner, political subdivision or coal owner 24 hours prior to commencement of drilling.

■ Shell has gas well drilling permits for the Williams property in Slippery Rock Township.

■ Shell has oil and gas well drilling permits for the West property in Slippery Rock Township, where the company was issued a violation on July 19, 2011, for failure to plug a well upon abandonment.

■ Shell has gas well drilling permits for the Puryear property in Cherry Township.

■ Shell has gas well drilling permits for the Drake property in Worth Township.

In Lawrence County:

■ Hilcorp has oil and gas well drilling permits for the Kinkela property in Pulaski Township.

■ Hilcorp has gas well permits for the McConahy property in Pulaski Township.

■ Hilcorp has oil and gas well drilling permits for the Whiting property in Pulaski Township, where the company was issued a violation June 3 for failing to notify DEP within 24 hours that the water supply had been polluted.

There was no permit or drilling activity in the Allied News coverage area for Venango County.
