Local doc jailed on child porn charges

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock resident Mark Beres, who practiced optometry in New Castle, has been jailed on federal child porn charges.

Beres, 53, of 445 Center St., was ordered by U.S. Magistrate Judge Cynthia Eddy to be detained on a criminal complaint until he can be indicted on child pornography charges, according to the Associated Press.

Beres has been in custody since shortly after federal agents raided his home last week and allegedly found 500,000 images and 550 videos of children who were either nude or engaged in sex.

Authorities asked that Beres remain in custody while a grand jury reviews the case because he has allegedly acknowledged molesting three boys, ages 3, 7 and 13, on several occasions.

It is not yet clear when or where the alleged molestations took place.

Beres is represented by a federal public defender who has a blanket policy of not speaking to the media.

Authorities have 30 days to obtain a grand jury indictment.
