SRU preparing to mark 125 years

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University will mark a milestone anniversary in 2014 -- 125 years -- and plans are already under way for a yearlong celebration.

A committee made up of volunteers from various parts of the campus recently formed, according to a news release that detailed very preliminary plans.

SRU President Dr. Cheryl Norton has directed a committee to arrange a celebration that will also include the Slippery Rock community, which was responsible for the 1889 founding of the Normal School that has developed into SRU.

Wilma Cavill, assistant professor of safety management and SRU's longest serving faculty member, and Robert Watson, interim vice president for student affairs and vice president for student life emeritus, are honorary chairs for the celebration.

Co-chairs of the steering committee are: George Mihalik, professor of safety management and head football coach; Laurel Dagnon, director of programming in SRU's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership; and Judy Silva, assistant professor in Bailey Library in charge of university archives.

The anniversary theme is "Celebrating Our Honored Traditions. Embracing Our Unlimited Potential." A Twitter account with the handle @SRU125 has been set up and the committee hopes to gather 100,125 views during the year. A website will soon be available.

The president's cabinet will provide the vision and overall support for the celebration.

"The 125th celebration is for the past and for the future. We are looking at 125 years of excellence. We want to create another memory celebrating our excellence across the country - and the world," Norton said. "This is a chance for remembering, a way of connecting the community and what we have been and what we will be."

Norton hopes SRU students and alumni will get involved and Mihalik said the coordinating committee is already fielding suggestions for special events.

"We want this to be a 'year to remember' for everyone involved," he said. "The overall purpose is to bring the entire campus together."

Committee heads are asked to recruit more volunteers over the summer, and the steering committee expects to have a tentative schedule of events for early 2014 when everyone meets up in August, Silva said.

Events already planned include: a special lecture series on SRU's history; identifying 125 firms that employ SRU alumni; gallery exhibits of SRU memorabilia; athletic events; and a fundraising gala in May.
