Nogay plans to retire

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Area School District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Nogay is retiring at the end of the school year, ending her four-decade career as an educator.

“It’s been a real pleasure,” Nogay told the board at the end of the Oct. 21 meeting after the Rev. Michael Scheer, board president, made the announcement.

Scheer admitted he was reluctant to accept her intent to retire June 30, but now is the time to start the process to search for her replacement.

“It will be hard to replace you,” he said.

Nogay came to Slippery Rock in early 2001 after spending about seven years as principal at Hickory High School, Hermitage; she started as assistant superintendent and was named superintendent in 2007, taking over Dr. Lee Beaton’s post.

“We still like you,” Scheer joked.

Nogay, who lives in Hermitage, said she’s enjoyed her time in Slippery Rock and especially appreciates the open communication she’s had with the board members.

“I’ve always felt very welcome,” said Nogay, who’s worked in education for about 43 years.

The board has a lot of work to do over the coming months, but thankfully the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City, has many free resources to help with the search for a new superintendent, from writing a job description to posting the job opening, Scheer said.

After the meeting, Nogay said that in her retirement she plans to enjoy time with her family, which includes one child and one grandchild.

She also plans to continue her time at Youngstown State University, where she teaches doctorate program courses in educational leadership and superintendency.

Nogay, a Youngstown native and graduate of Mount Union College, has also worked as assistant principal of Hubbard High School and taught biology and chemistry in Sebring schools.

Also on Monday, Oct. 21, the board appointed Karen McDowell to fill the seat vacated by Kenneth Speer, who resigned Sept. 23 for personal reasons.

The position represents Region 3, which covers Brady and Worth townships and Slippery Rock and West Liberty boroughs. McDowell was not at the meeting, and her post expires at the end of 2015.

The board is still accepting letters of interest for the vacancy created Oct. 7 by Dr. Mark Mraz, another Region 3 member who resigned for personal reasons.

Applicants must live in Region 3 and must submit letters of interest as soon as possible to: Paul Cessar, Board Secretary, by email at paul_cessar@slipperyrock.k12.pa.us or through the mail at 201 Kiester Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
