Board OKs raises

GROVE CITY — Raises for non-union employees were approved at Monday's Grove City Area School Board meeting with some concerns.

District principals and its technology coordinator were allowed raises that ranged from 2.3 percent to 3.4 percent, which was down from 2.75 percent to 4.41 percent submitted by Superintendent Dr. Richard Mextorf at last week's workshop meeting.

The board directed Mextorf for the lesser numbers, which resulted in salaries ranging from $67,261 to $106,367 after the increases.

The vote for the eight raises was passed 6-2, with Faye Bailey and Scott Somora striking them down. Adam Renick was absent from the meeting.

A 3-percent raise for the district's business manager/board secretary - for a total salary of $78,795 - was approved 7-1, with Somora having the dissenting vote.

The superintendent's 2.75 percent raise was approved by all but Bailey and Somora, bringing Mextorf's salary up to $133,102.

The remaining non-union employees received 2.75 percent raises, including the athletic director, school psychologist, technology coordinator at George Junior Republic, cafeteria director, chief of maintenance, administrative secretaries and others.

Their salaries ranged from $5,715 to $68,104 after the 2.75 increase.

All but Bailey and Somora voted for those remaining increases.

Since last week's workshop meeting, Somora stated he talked to people in the community who were against the raises, which influenced some of his voting.

Bailey had 15 constituents contact her concerned about the raises. "In the business world, you get about 2 percent or less," she said.

With the board also voting for mills to be raised this school year, while families are on fixed incomes and getting free/reduced lunches, Bailey believed the lower amount would have been "more than fair" for non-union staff and administrators.

"I'm on board with what you're saying," said Vern Saylor. However, rewarding administrators and staff with healthy pay is an important part of keeping them from leaving the district.

"What we're trying to build here is consistency," he said. 

Veronica Norcross believed the administrators were deserving of the larger raises; however, "as a senior citizen and taxpayer, it's a real burden on me," she said. "I don't make near as much as the administrators."
