GROVE CITY — The Grove City High School class of 1963 celebrated their 50th anniversary of graduation with a weekend packed with activities for all classmates and their spouses to enjoy.

The weekend began on Friday, Oct. 4, with 41 people riding a float in the high school homecoming parade.

The group, with an additional four people, then attended the homecoming football game, followed by a gathering at My Brother's Place, with 47 people attending. Classmates, whether attending or not, were given the opportunity to purchase a picture, a reunion booklet, and a T-shirt designed for the Class of '63.

Saturday began with 15 people touring the new Grove City Middle School in the morning. Several classmates also checked out the Grove City Area Historical Society.

That evening, 95 classmates and spouses, plus four former teachers, gathered at Grove City Country Club for a buffet dinner, followed by a short business meeting, dancing and catching up on activities and family with classmates.

All classmates received a reunion gift that was wrapped when they arrived. Early in the evening they unwrapped the gift (a star ornament) and sought out the person whose 1963 senior picture was contained within that ornament.

A video of pictures from classmates, plus some previous reunions, was streamed on a wall the entire evening. Class members enjoyed reminiscing over two tables full of mementos and spent quiet time at the memorial display honoring the 32 deceased class members.

Teachers attending were Joan Stuck, Dick Noel, Wally Shied and Earl Zinkham. Mr. Shied spoke briefly about his first job after college as speech teacher and junior class play director at GCHS in 1962.

The weekend ended with 45 people enjoying a Sunday brunch at My Brother's Place.

Many in attendance did a lot of rearranging of personal schedules to commit to attend, with several returning for the first time in 50 years. One of those first-time-back classmates was Ron Coleman, who still holds the long jump record at the high school.

Serving on the reunion committee were: Chairmen Bill and Mary Ann Sarnataro Collins, Tom Lewis, Linda Minor Nagel, Dick Schultz, Nettie Bell Sowers, Kay Sowers Dannels, Guy Hindman, Karen Mathieson Bonzer, Jeanne Shaffer Harper, Dick J. Snyder, Dayne Webster, Ann Lumley Morgan, and Nancy Bennett Barnes.

The committee is indebted to classmates Patty Allen Vogeley, Lucia Capron, Lee Davis, LeeAnn Bollinger Mundt, and Jeanne Turner Earley for their willingness to use many cell phone minutes encouraging classmates to attend.

The class is planning to dedicate a memorial gift and scholarship at the high school, which will be announced at a later date.
