Dorothy Mae McCandless Henderson, of Grove Manor, 435 N. Broad St., Grove City, who has lived in the borough since 1978, recently celebrated her 97th birthday.
Dorothy was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Butler to James Thompson McCandless and Lida Albert McCandless.
She earned her teaching degree from what was Slippery Rock State Teacher’s College, now Slippery Rock University, and taught for five years after graduating.
She’s a member of the Grove City Women’s Club and the Grove City Literary Club.
Dorothy belongs to Tower Presbyterian Church.
She was married to the Rev. George William Henderson, who passed away in March 2001.
She has a daughter, Carol Henderson Oram, who is married to Robert N. Oram, and they live in Sarasota, Fla.
Dorothy also has two grandchildren, Robert Oram and Barbara Oram, and one great-grandchild, Savannah Jean Peters, 11/2.
Dorothy’s birthday celebration was held the afternoon of Oct. 6 and hosted by her daughter Carol and included 10 friends, a surprise to Dorothy’s delight.
Dorothy is one of the oldest living residents of Grove Manor. She loves to talk with and bring joy to the other residents and staff.
