GROVE CITY — Olde Town Grove City and the Grove City Community Food Pantry have started the Parade of Trees, an annual event that collects donations for the food pantry by pairing local businesses and nonprofits to display Christmas tree in the merchants' windows.

Starting Saturday, Dec. 8, people can vote for their favorite display by taking food items to participating stores and placing the donations under the tree.

The nonprofits decorate the trees and the one that collects the most donations will be awarded $100 by Olde Town Grove City.

Hillview Elementary School students are helping by adopting a tree and collecting donations. The class with the most donations will get a pizza party courtesy of Olde Town Grove City. In 2011, 15 business, 15 nonprofits and Hillview students collected 5,092 items for the food pantry.

Businesses will accept donations through Dec. 22. For more information, call Olde Town Grove City at 724-458-0301.

This time  of year, the Food Pantry needs all the help it can get. Other ways to help out include:

Š Make an online donation to the pantry on behalf of family, friends, and other special recipients. Gift donations in any amount can be made safely and conveniently through the GCCFP website,

The online gift-giving option allows for making secure donations in a few easy steps, using Paypal or Amazon for payment. In the process, gift-givers can opt to have the GCCFP send electronic or hand-written acknowledgments specifying "In honor of" or "In memory of," or "On behalf of" recipients.

Donations are always accepted  at the pantry from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, as well as by mail to 114 S. Center St., Grove City, 16127.

Š With their Christmas food distribution coming up on December 14-15, the pantry has a specific shopping list: Canned fruits, fruit juices, pie crust mix, cranberry sauce, evaporated milk, gravy mix, and baking supplies are most needed for holiday meals.

Offered to registered clients, the holiday food bag supplements the usual allowance of a three-day supply of food per month. Eligible households receive a turkey or ham donated by community organizations, as well as the "fixings" donated by individuals, families, churches, and other groups.

Donations are accepted 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 724-458-5208.
