MERCER COUNTY AREA — Workshop for arts grant seekers set

SHARON – ArtsErie will hold a workshop for the 2012 Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grants at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (June 7) at the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, Founders Room, 41 Chestnut St., Sharon.

The program is open to Mercer County residents and organizations. The program provides opportunities for arts organizations, individual artists and community-based groups to apply for up to $3,000 in funding to support performances, exhibitions, and other arts projects that are presented to the public between Sept. 1 and Aug. 31, 2013.

Grant applications are due June 29. Workshops are designed to provide detailed information on the program, and to guide prospective candidates through the application process. GC Arts Council camp registration is Thursday

GROVE CITY - The Grove City Arts Council art and theatre camp for local children and teens kicks off with a registration on Thursday (June 7).

The camp will take place at 9 a.m. June 25-June 29 at the Grove City Christian Academy. There will be a family reception June 29 at which the kids will display their artwork, plays, writing and cooking. Kids can choose between courses in pottery, culinary arts, creative writing and theatre.

Organizers will hold a registration fair from 3 to 6 p.m.  Thursday, June 7 at Beans on Broad coffeehouse in downtown Grove City. Interested parents are encouraged to stop by, meet the teachers, and register their children for classes.

Park celebrates outdoors day

HERMITAGE – National Get Outdoors Day will be celebrated Saturday (June 9) beginning at 10 a.m. at shelter 4 in Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Road.

Friends of Buhl Park 5k run/2 mile walk in memory of Dale Pokorney begins at 10 a.m. with registration from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at shelter 4. For a schedule of all activities held visit or facebook or call 724-981-5522.


Camera Club photos to be in GC, Mercer

MERCER COUNTY -- The New Castle Camera Club’s winning photos from the recent show at The Hoyt Institute of Fine Art in New Castle will be on display in two Mercer County locations.

Creative Framing, 235 S. Broad St. in Grove City, will display the photos until June 16. Hours are 10 to 5 p.m. weekdays and most Saturdays.

Then, from June 19-30, the photos will be on display at the Mercer library, 110 Venango St. Library hours are: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday  and  9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 8 to noon Saturday. It’s closed Sunday and Monday.

Tour of Mercer County ride is June 16

MERCER COUNTY -- The Tour of Mercer County, presented by Mercer County Trails Association, will take place on Saturday, June 16, starting at Quaker State and Lube in Sharon, rain or shine.

The ride will benefit the MCTA, a volunteer non-profit corporation building multi-use recreational trails in the county.

There will be four routes available, ranging from 15, 35, 65 and 100 miles throughout Mercer County. All century riders will have a hot meal at the primary rest station that will be set up at Goddard State Park near the mid-way point.

All other riders will receive snacks, fruits and beverages at various places along the routes.

There will be support vehicles patrolling the course but bikes should be in good working order and riders are encouraged to bring tubes, patches, tools, pumps and other repair items. Helmets are required. Those who register by June 1 will get a discount and those who pre-register will receive a free shirt.

Munnell hosts ‘Secrets of Indian Medicine Man’

COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP -- Munnell Run Farm hosts a public one-hour nature walk at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. June 7.

Learn how local Indians practiced their “woods wisdom” to treat ailments, successfully hunt for and use plans for food and medicine.

This easy walk is great for families to enjoy nature and also rediscover many lost secrets of the Pennsylvania forest. Munnell Run Farm located at 753 Greenville Road, Coolspring Township. 3D target archery shoot set for June 30

COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP -- Archers and 3D target enthusiasts who have been yearning for a way to tune their bow skills are invited to Munnell Run Farm Foundation and Mercer County Conservation District for the second annual 3D Archery Shoot,  from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 30.

The cost is $10 a person and $5 a child (12 and under). The day will consist of a variety of activities from a fun shoot with 25 real-life 3D targets to a Top Shot for those with a competitive thirst.

Great food will be available, as well as vendors to display archery items, and trick and treats to enhance your hunting success. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Info: 724-662-2242.


MCCC to administer LPN test this month

MERCER – Mercer County Career Center will administer the pre-entrance for individuals interested in enrolling in the practical nursing class scheduled to begin in January. The pre-entrance exam is required before a student can make application to the program. Test dates are scheduled for June 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28. Prior registration is necessary and individual s are registered on a first-come, first serve basis.

Individuals meeting the pre-entrance criteria are eligible to apply for the 1500 hour, state approved Practical Nursing class. The class is offered over a twelve month perior and students successfully completing the program are eligible to make application for practical nursing licensure in Pennsylvania.

Classroom instruction on clinical experiences are offered concurrently as students are provided learning opportunities in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities.

Wildflower workshop set

MERCER – Munnell Run Farm holds a field workshop on identifying common wildflowers of Pennsylvania from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 20 at Munnell Run Farm Pig Barn located at 753 Greenville Road.

The workshop gives participants hands on experience in using field guides to identify wildflowers.

This workshop will provide the participant the knowledge to start enjoying the abundant beauty and excitement of exploring the wildflower world.

The workshop will consist of two parts that include a short indoor introduction and an outdoor session to use the learned skills to identify wildflowers growing in the local area.

Techniques and tools required for identification will be provided.

A nominal fee of $5 for adults and children under 12 are free. All proceeds benefit future environmental education programs.
