Do you want to know a dirty little secret? Microbes. These “dirty little secrets” live and thrive right under the soles of your shoes (or feet, if you’re a barefoot gardener). If it wasn’t for their presence, the things we grow in our gardens and landscapes probably wouldn’t survive without some type of inorganic help in the form of artificial fertilizers.

No matter how hard times are, take time to be kind

This past week, as I was leaving the local Walmart, I was driving my car toward the exit when I noticed a man walking in my direction. Now, as an experienced driver, when I see a pedestrian heading my way, it’s my natural instinct to slow down – which I did.

Keep an eye out this winter for these gardening show-stoppers

Did you know that we’ve just left the decade of the “Noughties?” It seems social statisticians see the need to name these passages of 10-year cycles. Some decades are memorable just by their number; the 60s had Beatlemania; the 70s gave us disco; the 80s brought us Reaganomics; and the 90s opened our eyes to the Green Movement, diversity and getting back in touch with ourselves.

Man’s curiosity about cats – it’s a curious thing

Since the dawn of time, man has managed to come up with great inventions and innovations simply by asking questions.“What would happen if I put brontosaur meat in those hot flames?”“What if we took that rock and made it round?”“How about we take a piece of sausage and wrap it inside a pancake?”Face it, man is a curious animal, and it is that curiosity that has made man the sort of man he is today. And when I say “man,” of course, I mean moron.

Should you just leave leaves alone?

LEAVES are about the only good things I get from the changing of the season. I don’t look forward to cold weather, snow, sunless days, or driving on icy roads.I use leaves as a natural soil additive and you should, too.

Chamber-sponsored Halloween parade planned for Oct. 27

This year’s Grove City Halloween parade is being sponsored by the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade, set for 7 p.m. Oct. 27, has traditionally been sponsored by the Grove City Kiwanis Club. However, the club disbanded earlier this year, so the chamber offered to sponsor the event in order to keep the tradition going.

Popular showy flower is the mother of all fall displays

Fall officially began yesterday at 5:18 p.m. And that means chrysanthemums will start showing up everywhere. How did these showy members of the aster family become one of the most recognizable signs of autumn? I suspect it had something to do with plant propagators and the need for color in the fall garden.

Now that Labor Day is behind us, a beautiful fall lies before us. This is my personal favorite time of the year: The weather is a bit chilly so those sweaters and sweatshirts feel pretty good; and it’s the time of year when you can snuggle under blankets with a good book or lounge beside a nice fire.Oh, yes, I forgot – the kids are back in school too! Schedules are in order again as the academic year begins and we start the final months of 2009.

Gearing up for slow mow: Time to winterize mowers

The kids and I just finished mowing the lawn. I usually take the biggest chunk of the obstacle course, but having two helpers really cuts down on the amount of time each of us has to spend going around in circles. I think cooler temperatures make the chore seem less boring, and this past Sunday’s high of around 75 with a northerly breeze helped us finish in record time.

Troop 83 honors new Eagle Scouts Deyarmin, Kowalsky

On July 19, Troop 83 of Mercer and the families and friends of Stephen Deyarmin and Robert Kowalsky Jr. celebrated two new Eagle Scouts at Mercer’s Bethany Presbyterian Church. Stephen and Bobby began their scouting in 1997 as part of Grove City’s Pack 76 Tiger Cubs. They worked their way through the scouting ranks as a team with only a brief separation after achieving their Arrow of Light in February 2002, during which time Stephen was part of Troop 71 in Leesburg.
