Parade, ‘Taste of Grove City’ will highlight streetscape dedication

When talks of revitalization began in Grove City in 2001, community members probably pictured re-paved streets, sidewalks, and, perhaps, a few new light poles downtown. Now, seven years later, Olde Town does have newly minted streets, sidewalks and light poles – not to mention revamped store facades, two large art murals, park benches, LED traffic lights, new eateries and stores, and more pedestrian traffic than anticipated.

When summer days are hazy, even gardeners should be lazy

Overheard at a recent garden party: “I was telling him how the neighbors are saying how beautiful our flower beds are and he said, ‘If they looked closer they’d see there’s no mulch!’ After he said that, things went downhill fast!”Maureen and I have had similar spats. Just the other day at the supper table we got into such a heated debate over some garden triviality that our son, AJ, told us to shut up because we sounded like two bickering teenagers (he’s 15). I think the heat of summer is partly to blame for a short fuse or two; that’s OK, though – we’re allowed.

‘Positive psychology’ key to happiness, health

Happiness seems like an elusive dream and a chase for most of us. But is it really elusive? We live in America, the land of opportunity – happiness, as viewed by many around the world – and a place for which people are risking their lives to enter and become one of us. But are we really a happy nation?

A 420-mile bicycle trip from northern Indiana to Grove City may seem daunting to even the most-fit of athletes, but it’s old hat for 78-year-old Doyle Putman.Putman and his son, Brent, put pedal to the metal this past week, traveling from their home state to Grove City on their old, reliable – and gas-free – bicycles.

A day in the life of Jill Shankel

From being an office manager for 20 years to environmental expert the last 10, it took Jill Shankel, 55, a while to figure out what she wanted to do “when I grew up,” she said. Allied News staff writer Felicia A. Petro talked to Shankel about her dream job with the Mercer County Conservation District (MCCD) in Coolspring Township, where she educates children about agriculture and water, as well as helping out watershed groups in the county.

“Do you have any suggestions on what I might write about for my next article?” I asked Maureen over supper the other day. and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;“Let me give it some thought,” she replied. and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp; and nbsp;I was hoping for an instant suggestion and was a bit disappointed by her seemingly mundane answer to my seemingly important question. But, as always, she came through for me.

My neighbor Michele called the other day and asked if I’d come over and help her dig up a clump of stubborn irises that had wedged themselves in between the paved driveway and yard. The weather was perfect, early spring warmth lured me out and I grabbed my garden fork, grinning from ear to ear, contemplating dirt and neighborly gardening gossip.

“It doesn’t matter how many times you say the word, it’s a word you don’t want to say.”This confession doesn’t stop Eve Ensler from making the “V” word her signature since penning “The Vagina Monologues,” a controversial play that’s become a world-renowned cult phenomena. The play contains a series of narrations by women about issues – including rape, sex and mutilation – related to the part of their anatomy that’s often considered unspeakable.
